The Swirl on Frozen Yogurt

These days, it seems that no matter where you turn, there's likely a frozen yogurt shop on the corner. Indeed, frozen yogurt has recently joined the ranks of the most popular frozen treats in the U.S. In fact, by the end of 2013, America had 2,582 frozen yogurt stores, and the number is only climbing.

So what started this "froyo" craze? It might shock you to discover that its origins date all the way back to the early 1970s in New England. In 1978 a Boston-based ice cream shop started selling frozen yogurt. Originally, frozen yogurt was coined, "frogurt."

Just like today, frozen yogurt was marketed as a healthier dessert option in the 80s. That's because frozen yogurt has an extremely low fat content, compared to ice cream and gelato, which can contain anywhere from 8% to beyond 10% of fat.

The 80s saw a newfound awareness for health, and with that, frozen yogurt flourished. Suddenly, one could fill their frozen dessert cups with yogurt ice cream at any location, from a shopping center to the mall.

In the 1990s, frozen yogurt remained steadily popular. But in the early 2000s, frozen yogurt once again became all the rage as self-serve yogurt handles became popular. These stores equip the customer with frozen yogurt supplies and toppings, letting them create the sundae of their dreams. In addition to yogurt supplies, these shops are also equipped with many flavor handles, allowing customers to mix and match to their liking.

Whether it's ice cream or frozen yogurt, Americans just can't get enough of frozen desserts. In fact, 90% of all households regularly indulge in frozen dessert treats. And of all of the dairy produced in the United States, 9% of it is used for ice cream and frozen yogurt.
