4 Tips for Successfully Opening Your Own Ice Cream Shop

Have a craving for business? Are you considering opening your very own ice cream parlor? If you have no experience with owning a shop, here’s what you’ll need to do.

Paperwork and Permits
Before you can open your business, you’ll need to have the proper paperwork, permits, and licenses. Depending on where you live, you’ll have to look into the specific requirements as each state is different. You’ll need to read up on the health and safety laws for your area so you can properly pass a safety and health inspection. Especially since you’re going to be opening a place that serves food, you’re physically not allowed to be in existence without passing a health inspection.

Figure Out What Your Customers Like
When deciding what ice cream flavors you’re going to carry, think about what your customers may like. Sure, it’s a good idea to stock up on the classic strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, and mint chocolate chip, but you also want to offer something different. Think about flavors that sound delicious, especially ones other ice cream shops in your area don’t offer. There are about 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream and similar desserts produced in the United States each year. So it stands to reason that there are a lot of flavor options to choose from. You could even create your own concoctions out of fresh fruit and a plain ice cream base. Make sure you have some dairy-free options, too, so everyone coming into your store can enjoy these frozen desserts.

Purchase Your Supplies
Along with the ice cream, you’re going to need something to serve them in. Pick up a bunch of ice cream cups, plastic spoons, cones, and ice cream cups with lids for easy transport. Add some flair and identity to your shop by putting your company's name on the plastic spoons. You could even promote a healthy earth by offering customers 10% off their next dessert by bringing their plastic spoons with them instead of getting new ones.

Ask For Help
While it may be tempting to do everything by yourself, especially when you’re just starting out, it’s important to ask for help. Reach out to your friends and family and ask them to work a shift or two, to help clean, or to help figure out the finances. Doing this will definitely make your first few months a lot easier.

If you want to open your own ice cream shop, there are a few things you’ll need to do. Make sure you're setting your business up for success!
